Overcoming the fear of entering a gym is a real thing for many adults as they enter their 30’s, 40‘s, and beyond. For most adults, it has been a couple of decades since they participated in any meaningful strength training routine and most are aware enough to know their body has changed since the last time they lifted weights. This is a real concern; because as we put it off, the anxiety builds and the mountain to climb seems bigger. Like investing, the best time to start was years ago; and the second best time is right now. The fear comes from the changes that happen in real life. We gain weight, have injuries, work stress, illness, child birth and the list goes on. Then, add in the over supply of information and it leaves many adults feeling stuck. In the last week, four of our adult members echoed the same feeling—thankful their training group was welcoming and our coaches accommodating to meet them where they were at. Here is an overview of how we help people overcome fear and live a better and stronger life.
Assess
We meet with everyone one-on-one to collect their goals and health history. We will perform a quick movement screen to help asses any risk of injury based on their training goals and history. After that, we collect current metrics relevant to their goals. An action plan is created that they feel comfortable with. Once we have a plan mapped out for 90 days, we will schedule our next check-in to monitor progress. If you don’t know where you’re starting, you can’t know where you’re going.
Teach
During our on-boarding process, we teach all the movements we commonly use in the training plan that each person will be doing. We also explain the different pieces of equipment in the gym and what they each do and when you would use them. The teaching never stops. Every session we provide cues specific to each person on the different exercises. Writing a workout on the board isn’t coaching. We are with you every rep of every set. Our members in group settings also help each other with the experiences of what helped them overcome sticking points.
Track
We use the Train Heroic app for our members to log and track their workouts. This helps each person see progress over time and helps to keep positive momentum or see where potential training issues have popped up. If you don’t track progress, it’s easy to miss what you’ve gained and feel behind. In the app, you can also add reminder notes to yourself for the next time you perform an exercise.
Proper Loading
Proper loading is the most critical part of any training plan. When the training load in a session or a week has exceeded someone’s current capacity, it’s an invitation for injury. If the load is too light for an extended period of time, then it won’t stress the body enough to create a change. Our coaches constantly check previous logged training sessions to help members adjust each session based on their current goals.
Adjust
The coaches at Showtime help people adjust their workout plan each day. Sometimes stress is high or an old injury has flared up. Our coaches help each person adjust so they don’t have to grind through their session and potentially cause issues. In many of our sessions, we will have people performing a similar movement pattern like a squat, using different implements due to injury restrictions or current ability level. Workouts are just words on paper, but the magic happens in the adjustments each training session.
Evaluate
Every 90 days we meet to evaluate if the training is working. Are you closer to your goals or further away? Luckily, we evaluate using tools like our training app or the In-Body scanner to measure muscle and fat mass. This helps to remain objective about the data tied to the training. Once we have our new baseline of metrics, we can adjust the training plan and create new goals. You have different seasons of life, and we believe your training goals should as well.
If you ever delayed starting a training plan, or walked into a new gym and immediately felt lost or intimidated, you’re not alone. Many people have shared that same Sweat Session with one of our coaches to get the ball rolling. Book here: https://www.showtimestrength.com/programs/get-started
